When Kenny Werner took up a concert in the studio hall of the SDR in Stuttgart in 1992, he was experimenting with the possibilities of solo piano programs. In New York he had developed into one of the top pianists in the jazz metropolis, who was valued and booked by many musician colleagues (including Charles Mingus, Mel Lewis, Lee Konitz, Archie Shepp and many others) without a special one Moment of discovery. He grew into the role of the quality worker, who did not get his strength from the struggle for innovation, but from the elegance and finesse with which he incorporated the pianistic possibilities of the piano tradition into his music. This was also evident in the repertoire with which he made a stop on June 10, 1992 in the studio hall of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR) in Stuttgart. Most of the compositions were standards from the context of the Great American Songbook, which he took as a starting point in order to let his own creativity work on the basis of familiar melodies and shapes. SWR Jazzhaus is now publishing this wonderful concert document digitally as a stream and download as well as in physical formats on CD and LP.
