When the Modern Jazz Quartet made a stop at the Landesfunkhaus Niedersachsen of the Norddeutscher Rundfunk in Hanover on October 28, 1957, this quartet had long been a phenomenon on the jazz scene – in Europe as well as in the USA. Four instrumentalists – John Lewis on the piano, Milt Jackson on the vibraphone, Percy Heath on the double bass and Connie Kay on the drums – played jazz music that, with its blazing fire and subtle swing, didn’t really fit into the image that was then imagined in post-war Germany who made improvised music from the United States. The Modern Jazz Quartet soon became the most popular jazz ensemble in Europe.
